What eBay’s £891M Depop Acquisition Means for Private Label Retail in 2026

Angus Griffin

When one of the biggest global marketplaces agrees to acquire a secondhand fashion platform for £891 million, it shows us something important about where retail is heading.

eBay’s intentions to purchase Depop from Etsy, expected to close in Q2 2026, are bigger than just a headline. It highlights a clear change in strategy towards recommerce, circular fashion and consumer demand. Etsy purchased Depop back in 2021 for around £1.19 billion and has changed focus to its own handmade and vintage marketplace. Depop will not be absorbed into eBay but will continue to operate under its own brand inside of eBay’s ecosystem.

Recommerce Is Now Central to Retail Strategy

Depop has come into its own by crafting a reputation through community-led discovery and secondhand fashion, with a majority younger audience. The main draw of the platform comes from its focus on sustainability, individualism and social commerce. eBay continues to strengthen its market share of secondhand apparel and footwear with this acquisition. Which was necessary as Vinted continues to increase in popularity.

This is about more than just used clothing; it shows how apparel retail is adapting to meet new demands. The stigma around buying pre-owned products has been falling off over the past few years, but the expectation of digital marketplaces to feel interactive and trustworthy has increased.

What This Means for Private Label Brands and Suppliers

As the resale market continues to grow, the importance of product quality and durability has increased exponentially. Your product is judged by each new owner and held to the same standard as if it were brand new. The willingness to buy pre-owned products is consistent with the value-driven purchasing trends of the younger generation. Private label manufacturers that focus on product integrity and high-quality production will be better suited to meet consumer expectations.

Sustainability is also becoming more commercially desirable, as well as being heavily regulated. Circular retail models are not just for big names like Patagonia, but have been adapted by emerging fashion brands that are including resale compatibility into their product launches.

At the same time, major platforms are investing in logistics, payments and authentication systems to increase legitimacy and trust on their platforms. For private label suppliers, this means that distribution partnerships and fulfilment adaptability are as important as the product. The long-term product lifecycle has increased in priority.

Investor Confidence Reflects Retail Direction

There was a significant reaction to the announcement of the acquisition. Etsy’s and eBay’s share prices both rose following the announcement, reflecting confidence in the decision as a whole.

Retail capital is increasingly aimed at models that are focusing on sustainability, digital engagement and long-term consumer value. If you supply to retail, aligning your product strategy with these shifts is paramount in future-proofing your business.

The Bigger Picture for Retail in 2026

The eBay and Depop deal helps us see that retail progress comes from evolving to meet consumer needs. Mainstream platforms are learning from a new generation of communities. Investors see the value of recommerce and sustainability in retail, and white and private-label companies have an increasing part to play in achieving it.

For your business, the opportunity lies in recognising how these trends translate into practical action, from product design to retail partnerships.
