Amazon’s Sustainable Packaging Evolution
Amazon’s commitment to its customers and the environment has pushed them to the forefront of the packaging industry. Delivering both customer satisfaction and measurable environmental benefits.
Trials in Spain
Their newest innovation is the bio-based bag that they have been trialing in Spain, with 75% customers enjoying the product. These bags are made out of European-sourced vegetable materials.
Is this the new norm? Vegetable bags?
Amazon for everyone
On a wider scale, Amazon has been making leaps and bounds in waste reduction. Due to their less-is-more attitude to packaging, they created the Ships in Product Packaging (SIPP) program. This intuitive program does what it says on the tin. They don't add any unnecessary Amazon packing on top of the original packaging that the manufacturers put the product in. The SIPP program has led to significant changes in their packaging and waste landscape.
Milestones over the years:
2024
-
18 million unique products were certified for the SIPP program
-
16.4% reduction in single-use plastic delivery packaging
-
85% landfill diversion rate
(Landfill diversion is when waste is sent to recycling or energy recovery rather than landfill.)
2023
-
Avoided 1,180 metric tonnes of Amazon Fresh packaging
-
Avoided 1,300 metric tonnes of Whole Foods Market packaging
2015 - Present
-
4.2 million metric tonnes of packaging materials avoided
